To use the Matesaver man overboard Rescue Pole efficiently the tackle supplied with the MateSaver needs to be clipped to an appropriate point overhanging the vessel.

Most vessels have some suitable form of davit, platform or rigging that is strong enough to lift an unconscious casualty or aid a conscious casualty.

Because the development of a practical recovery system will vary from vessel to vessel we would recommend consultation with your local department of transport surveyor or classification society on how best this aid to rescue may be used.

The Matesaver man overboard should always be ready for use in an emergency with regular maintenance to ensure ﬁrst class service at all times.

If a propeller guard is not fitted, engines should be stopped when the person in the water is brought along-side aft.

Matesaver man overboard Manufacturer’s recommendations:

Replace after ﬁve years – due to natural deterioration
Also a visual check every six months and after use for damage or corrosion checking all components are secure and intact.

Block & Tackle Instructions

This is how the pulley should be hanging from the davit, prior to lifting operation. ORANGE pulley at the top and the orange rope simply wrapped around the hi-vis rope. The BLUE pulley should be at the bottom, with the prusik wrapped around the rope and connected to the block/pulley using a PIN (it should be set up from the bag).

You then pinch the prusik together (as below) and lower the end of the block and tackle assembly.

Then once the BLUE end of the block and tackle is low enough to the lifting strap, connect the Karabiner by twisting and pulling downward the locking mechanism. There is a locking mechanism due to LOLER requiring a two stage ‘clamp’ for lifting/man riding purposes. It can be carried out using one hand, but this takes some getting used to.
